I haven’t personally tried this, as most of my receipts are already electronic, and if not, I can scan them in my FreshBooks mobile app. Same with Xero. But Expensify might be worth checking into if you aren’t ready for accounting software yet.
  • Bluevine Business Checking: Sounds strange, I know, but it can be a great ‘in-between’ step. It has simple accounting functions included, like invoicing, payment links, bills, auto-bill payment, tracking customers and items/services. And you can separate your funds into designated purposes like Vacation, Slow Season Cushion, Taxes, whatever you’d like. It’s easy to transfer to each fund, and the beauty is, you’re earning interest on all your funds combined, with no monthly fees. I use it for one of my other businesses and have been very happy with it.

ProTip: You’ll notice I’m not mentioning the big Q Elephant in the room? In my opinion it’s become too unwieldy and confusing for beginners. Most business owners who try to do their own books end with a mess that needs to be cleaned up later. And that’s expensive! If you’re going to start with accounting software, do yourself a favor and choose something more user-friendly.
